THE ART OF SELF-PROMOTION: A STUDY BASED ON NEW SCHOOL ARTISTES; BLAQBONEZ & OXLADE

The Nigerian music space is as volatile as it’s ever been, and rapidly evolving every day. Put simply, there’s no one-size-fits-all to ‘blow’ in here. Artistes and labels alike are embracing more contemporary strategies to promote music, especially through social media – as techniques that would work barely three to five years ago could almost cripple an upcoming act today. We’ve witnessed the come-up of music challenges, covers and comedy skits as urban strategies to mention a few.

Nevertheless, a number have found a way to hack it. The Chocolate City rapper, Blaq Bonez aka. Mr. Boombastic is the lead orchestrator of the highly controversial self-proclaimed status “Best Rapper in Africa” which he got an abbreviated neckpiece ‘BRIA’ spelt. In recent times, following the release of his single ‘HABA’ the artist has resorted to the use of the video sharing platform – TikTok, to record some of the most comic pieces many have seen. His creativity and versatility has been on full blast, receiving applauds and recognition from his industry cohorts, and fans alike. BlaqBonez hustles like he’s unsigned and people love him for that.

Secondly is none other than the ‘AWAY’ crooner, singer/songwriter Oxlade. Despite being unsigned to any record label, Oxlade has arguably put out one of the most distinctive afrobeats project of 2020 – ‘Oxygene’. From working at a cybercafé three years ago to hash out a living, to releasing “Mamiwota” with BlaqBonez, his love and talent for music is undisputed. Organic streams and listening makes it hard to doubt his sound, and Oxlade could care less what haters think. The independent act has had the privilege of performing at Wizkid’s Starboy Fest shutdown at the O2 in October of 2019, and also at Davido’s City of David, claiming to not knowing a soul but accruing these landmarks to his grandmothers prayers. ‘Oxygenes’ as he tags his fans have been engaging all sort of challenges on social media in promotion of his debut project and your guess is as good as mine, labels would be swarming for the upcoming act. We are optimistic he’ll make the right choice.
