FIVE (5) ALBUMS TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 2022

OMAH LAY 2022 has been a great year in the Nigerian music industry. Awards have been won, amazing performances have been recorded, and Afrobeats keeps thriving. Plus, over the span of the first quarter, we have enjoyed stellar album/EP releases from stars like Adekunle Gold, Falz, Naira Marley, Rema, BOJ, Santi, ObongJayar, Victony, and just recently, Burna Boy, amongst many others. If you feel like Nigeria is currently sitting in the best spot at the music arena, there’s more to come. Here are some albums by brilliant artists which are scheduled to drop this year:

Boy Alone, Omah Lay

2020 is marked as an infamous year in the history of the 21st century. The COVID-19 pandemic invited a worldwide lockdown that confined everyone to their immediate environment. However, in the thick of the lockdown, Omah Lay rose with an EP, Get Layd, that became a hot, nationwide phenomenon. Since then, he has remained a sweet sensation in the music industry. With only a few EPs in his discography, the singer has decided to go big and release a new album titled, Boy Alone. The album is set to be out on Friday, July 15th, 2022 and available on all streaming platforms. We can’t wait!

Playboy, Fireboy DML

A remarkable talent from the YBNL family, Fireboy DML has firmly established himself in the music industry. This superstar continues to make notable statements, via his artistic creations, testifying to his ability to continue catering to the growth of Afrobeats. His debut album, Laughter, Tears, & Goosebumps (LGT), which dropped in 2019 set a viable canon of great music. Apollo, his second album, followed the same trend set by LGT. We have no doubts that with Playboy, which will be available on August 5th, 2022, Fireboy DML will demonstrate his status as one of the balmy talents reigning over Afrobeats.

More Love, Less Ego, Wizkid

The whole world is still reeling from the madness that is Made In Lagos, but Wizkid does not want to let up. He recently took to social media to announce the completion of his fifth studio album, More Love, Less Ego, stating, “I made this one with a lot of love!! Opoju!” In October 2021, Made In Lagos recorded over one billion streams across streaming platforms globally, less than a year after its release. This is a huge record that places his new album on a tall pedestal. We remain unworried because as always, Wizkid delivers. But the anticipation is something serious! More Love, Less Ego is expected to arrive on August 2nd, 2022.

Unruly, Olamide

Indigenous rapper and street pop god, Olamide is definitely an immovable presence in the Nigerian music industry. With about nine albums arranged in his catalogue, Olamide has resolved to expand his legacy by adding a tenth studio album, Unruly, this year.

While he discloses that this project might be his last, our fingers are crossed for the potential collaborations that we may experience at later dates. Unruly is still in the works because a release date is yet to be announced.

The Brother’s Keeper, Chike

Chike has promised to finally release his sophomore album, The Brother’s Keeper, in August, 2022. As the artist who comforted the ‘booless’ demographic on February 14th, 2020 with the release of his debut album, Boo of the Booless, Chike is an unstoppable force in the highlife, R&B niche. Boo of the Booless was so warmly received that it was praised as the “Nigerian album of the year in 2020.” We have high hopes for The Brother’s Keeper and expect to perceive the adroit songwriting, mellifluous sounds and incredible vocals that Chike always supplies.
