Prettyboy D-O gained prominence in the Nigerian music scene in 2017, upon the release of his hit single Peter Piper.Since then, he’s gone on to release 2 projects; Everything Pretty from 2018 and the most recent, Wildfire.Prettyboy D-O had quite a rough start to his 8-year long career, from shuffling between cities to make and promote his music, to balancing his music pursuit and bagging an educational degree.
The energetic Nigerian-American pop/dancehall artiste has since 2017, gradually built a cult following in Nigeria and beyond, and has created a “gangster” niche for himself. He’s well known for his rebellious lyrics and energetic sound.
On June 19, 2020, Prettyboy D-O released his sophomore project, Wildfire. An 8-track EP which comprises of various genres and is inspired by painful past experiences, while on his musical journey. As mentioned earlier, Prettyboy D-O didn’t have it easy in the early days of his career.

According to a publication by Fader earlier in the year, the artiste grew up with strict parents, his relationship with them has been strained by his rebellious streak over the years , but he loves them very much. He pretty much had to do everything on his own; he knew about his talent, he wasn’t going to put it to waste.

On Wildfire, he talks about the pain, the struggle and the self-belief. With songs like Waka, Odeshi which features Chop Life Crew member – Tim Lyre, Same Energy, Reality & Dey Go Hear Wehh, you can tell Prettyboy had a lot of altercations and disappointements from the past. He trashes these with his usual gangster energy. But put the pain aside, these songs are straight vibes.
The project peaked at #2 on Nigeria’s Apple Music albums chart and currently sits comfortably in the top 10, few weeks after its release. It sparked conversations over social media, especially with the intro of the hit song Wetin You Smoke, which features veteran rapper, Olamide. It contains some intriguing street lamba.
D-O shows a depth in talent and range on his sophomore project, he has proven that he can satisfy quite a number of listeners across genres and we can see his growth from 2017 until now. His music has inspired quite a number of young artistes like him, including Chocolate City rapper, Blaqbonez, who confirmed this during an interview with Pulse.
Prettyboy D-O may not be as blown as the Wizkid’s, Burna’s and Davido’s of our time, but he’s growing with the music, he’s inspiring a new generation of artistes and he’s slowly getting there.
We present to you our artiste of the month, June 2020, Prettyboy D-O.
